A few useful answers, in ordinary language.
You do not need the right trade term to ask a good question. Start with the door, key or control involved and the result you want. These answers can help you choose the next topic to explore.
Home keys and everyday locks
A key change concerns who can unlock a door. A repair concerns how the lock or entrance is working. Replacement introduces different hardware. Sometimes a household needs more than one of these, but a lost key does not automatically mean every lock needs replacing.
Vehicles, business entrances and garages
For a vehicle, whether a working key exists is an important detail. For a business, identify the door and who can approve work. For an overhead garage door, describe movement and controls. These everyday observations are more useful than choosing a replacement part before the situation has been assessed.
A few more answers.
Can I keep my existing locks after a move?
Possibly. Suitable existing locks may be rekeyed so a different key operates them. Condition, compatibility and which doors are included need checking. If the hardware is unreliable or you want a different arrangement, discuss that separately from the key change.
The key turns, but the door is difficult. What should I say?
Explain what happens with the door open and closed, without forcing it. Mention whether the bolt meets the frame comfortably and whether the entrance can currently be secured. Those details help describe a lock repair question without assuming a diagnosis.
Does rekeying my unit also cancel the building fob?
No. A private mechanical lock and a common-entry credential are separate. Contact the property manager about shared fobs, building codes and parking access. A private-door key change should not be taken as confirmation that all other access has changed.
Is a car lockout the same as a replacement-key request?
No. Say whether the keys are inside the vehicle, missing or damaged, and whether a working key remains. Give the year, make and model. Opening a locked car and providing a compatible replacement key or fob are different requests.
What location should I give near Town Center or the Metro?
Use the specific building or parking facility, level, row and entrance where relevant. Reston Town Center's shopping destination, Reston Town Center station and Reston Station are different locations. Your current meeting point may not be where the car is parked.
Do I need to know why the garage door stopped?
No. Describe its position, movement, new noise, visible damage and the controls involved. Keep clear of an unstable door and avoid repeated operation. The equipment and suitable repair scope need assessment; a symptom alone does not confirm a failed component.
What if I am locked out of a shared building?
Identify whether the obstacle is the common entrance or your private unit door. Contact the building's manager for managed entry and credential arrangements. Have the person who can authorize any private-door work available, and ask about current availability and the estimate.
